Bridge City

Royal Academy of Arts, 1996

Bridge City was Branson Coates contribution to the competition for an inhabitable bridge over the Thames that formed the final room of the exhibition, Living Bridges. The proposition is for a commercial park that capitalises on this extraordinary site on the Thames, with its magnificent views up and down stream through the giant occulus. Visitors would be swept upwards by a series of gentle interlocking ramps that connect the three levels of the bridge, culmination in a park at the top. A hotel occupies two circular structures towards the South Bank.
